Junjie Piao

Violin and Viola

Born in Yanji city, China, Junjie Piao is a Chinese Minority, speaking both Chinese and Korean. He started to learn violin at the age of 7 and received the Bachelor’s degree in music with the violin performance major from Yanbian University, China. He then moved to the USA and studied M.M.P. (Master Music Performance) at Campbellsville University. In May 2019, Junjie completed his D.M.A. (Doctor of Musical Arts) studies at The Catholic University of America under Alessandra Cuffaro and Oleg Rylatko.

Junjie is an experienced chamber and orchestra musician. From 2008 to 2012, he played the first violin in Yanbian Symphony Orchestra. After that, he was given the opportunity to continue as an intern in the same orchestra. During his studies in the USA, he was appointed the principal of the second violin in CU Symphony Orchestra, and the co-concertmaster in the CUA Symphony Orchestra. As a chamber musician, Junjie took the role as a violist and performed in concerts with his CU quartet, achieving high praise. Later, the quartet went on to receive the second prize in the 2016 Kentucky Ensemble Competition in Louisville.

As a soloist, Junjie has been winner of numerous competitions and scholarships. Including the 2009 Jilin Province Violin Competition in China, and the 2015 Young Artist String Competition in Kentucky, organized by the Music Teachers National Association. Throughout his master’s and doctoral studies, he has been awarded full scholarship for his achievement and contribution to the universities.

Besides being an outstanding performer, Junjie also embarks the role of a pedagogue with passion. He started giving individual violin lessons and chamber music coaching during his bachelor’s studies. Furthermore, he was later appointed to lead the sectional orchestral rehearsals and provide individual coaching for orchestra members at CU and CUA.
